Caritas is one of the most influential social service organizations in Germany. Its work spans a wide range of areas, including healthcare, support for older people, education, assistance for individuals with disabilities, and help for communities affected by natural disasters or crises. Yet Caritas stands for more than structured charitable activity. Its mission comes to life wherever people support one another in the spirit and values taught by Jesus Christ. This support can take many forms — within or outside church communities, carried out by professionals or volunteers, organized or entirely spontaneous.
As a worldwide network, Caritas works in solidarity to promote fairness, compassion, and social justice. The organization draws its strength and identity from Christian faith and the principles of Catholic social teaching. In Germany, the German Caritas Association serves as the coordinating body for a diverse group of diocesan, regional, and local Caritas branches, as well as for specialized charitable institutions and religious orders that carry out work in specific fields. Each of these groups operates independently and takes responsibility for its own services and programs.
Wherever people face hardship due to war, earthquakes, epidemics, floods, or severe storms, Caritas Germany provides support worldwide. Their approach to disaster relief extends far beyond immediate lifesaving measures. They focus intensely on long-term recovery, aiming to rebuild communities in ways that reduce future risks and strengthen resilience. Reconstruction projects are designed to empower affected families to take an active role in rebuilding their own lives, which is only possible when they are included from the very beginning.
Our partnership with Caritas Germany began in 2015, following Typhoon Nona’s heavy damage to our village. With their support, we provided emergency assistance and rebuilt 300 homes for the affected families. Two years later, in 2017, Caritas Germany supported another milestone project: the construction of a Senior Citizen Center offering daily activities for older adults. This center was among the first of its kind in the Philippines and continues to play an essential role in our community.
